大明寺位于揚州瘦西湖西北角的蜀岡中峰上,因始建于南朝宋孝武帝大明年間(公元457-464年)而得名,現在看到的寺是清同治年間建的。唐代名僧鑒真東渡日本前,即在大明寺傳經授戒,該寺因此出名。
整個大明寺分三個部分,中部是主體寺廟建筑,東部是棲靈塔,西部是園林式的后花園——西園。按中部-東部-西部的順序即可游覽全大明寺。
沿著舒緩的臺階爬上山——山不高,海拔才28米,即來到大明寺的正門。山路兩邊有很多出售香火的小販,不要買,外面的香是不準帶入寺內的。請香在寺內,60元起,比較貴,你可以不燒香只拜一拜。
景區中部的主體寺廟建筑沿南北走向分三路。中軸線上從南到北依次是牌樓、同時扮演著天王殿角色的山門、大雄寶殿。西路上主要看歐陽修,南邊是歐陽修任揚州太守時建的平山堂,后來蘇東坡任揚州太守時,為紀念歐陽修在平山堂后建造了谷林堂,北邊是歐陽祠。東路南邊是方丈室平遠樓,北邊是鑒真紀念堂,鑒真紀念堂東還有藏經樓。

各位游客,我們現在所到的地方是西園。我們腳下這段是清代的石鋪路面,據說乾隆皇帝曾經走過,所以有個很有趣的名字,叫乾隆漫步小道。各位游客,我們現在看到的這些碑刻是乾隆的游平山堂詩;另一碑刻在南邊,摹刻的是康熙帝題杭州靈隱寺詩。也許有朋友會問,康熙所題杭州靈隱寺的詩,為什么會立于揚州?這里有一段典故,康熙第二次南巡途經揚州,當時的揚州知府是滿洲正白旗人,其兄高承爵與皇帝關系密切。高承爵奉旨先到杭州考察,然后又趕回揚州伴駕前往杭州。后來康熙回京時,高承爵又送皇帝至山東,在御舟中皇帝大悅,賜《靈隱》詩一首,并欽升高承爵為江南江蘇按察使。為了顯示自己的榮耀,高承爵于這一年的三月十六日將此碑立在大明寺內。
